WWE Backlash, Kid Cudi, and a taco spot making tortillas the right way

May 7th-13th, 2026 · The Bay, Simplified

This week Tampa said "we're not playing." Like, the city genuinely stacked the calendar. WWE, Kid Cudi, a full country festival, Mother's Day, jazz at the river, and a handful of new spots you probably haven't heard of yet. We've got a lot to get through. Let's go.

Last week had solid energy but this week is on a different level. We're talking multiple arena shows, a multi-day festival right on the beach in Clearwater, and one of the more underrated free outdoor events of the year all happening at the same time. And yeah, Mother's Day is Sunday. If you haven't made a plan yet, keep reading. I've got you. This issue: the big events you can't miss, a few lowkey spots that hit different, and a couple new restaurants that deserve your attention before the lines get long.

Pro Tip

WWE Backlash is Saturday at Amalie (now Benchmark International Arena). If you're going, skip the parking garage drama and park at the Channelside Bay Plaza lot or take a rideshare to Sparkman Wharf and walk over. Also, Kid Cudi is Friday at the same venue. Two massive shows back-to-back means the whole Channelside area is going to be loud this weekend. Plan accordingly.

This Week at a Glance

  1. 1.WWE Backlash 2026 hits Amalie Arena Saturday, tickets from $128
  2. 2.Kid Cudi brings M.I.A. + Big Boi to the same venue Friday
  3. 3.Country Thunder Florida runs Thursday through Saturday at Coachman Park, Clearwater
  4. 4.Rock the Park is Thursday at Curtis Hixon, free, obviously
  5. 5.Land on Your Feet Jazz Festival hits Water Works Park Saturday
  6. 6.Mother's Day brunches across the Bay, Sunday options listed below
  7. 7.New masa-forward taco spot in Tampa quietly making noise

7-Day Weather Whisper

Hot week. Classic May. A little rain sneaks in Monday but otherwise this is full go-outside weather, pair the outdoor festivals with Thursday/Friday, save Sunday brunch for the waterfront spots.

DayHi/LoConditions
Thu☀️89°/75°Sunny, perfect for Rock the Park
Fri☀️91°/75°Hot. Stay hydrated before the show
Sat🌤️91°/75°Heat index near 97°, plan around shade
Sun🌤️90°/76°Slight shower chance, still solid for brunch
Mon🌦️88°/73°30% showers, morning into early afternoon
Tue☀️90°/71°Clean
Wed☀️92°+Tampa doing Tampa things

Marv's Tampa Pro Tips

  • Rock the Park at Curtis Hixon is free every first Thursday, show up before 7 if you want actual shade

  • Kid Cudi Friday + WWE Saturday means Channelside is gridlocked both nights. Build in 30 extra minutes if you're driving

  • Country Thunder is at Coachman Park in Clearwater this year, beach vibes, full festival setup. Saturday is the strongest lineup

  • Mother's Day brunch at Rusty Pelican books out days before, if you haven't called, do it today

  • Gilberto Santa Rosa at the Straz Friday night is lowkey the best show happening this weekend and barely anyone in Tampa knows who he is. Salsa royalty. Trust me on this

  • Con Amor on Florida Ave is doing fresh masa tortillas from scratch. Go early, they sometimes sell out

Digest

🔥 Kid Cudi, Rebel Ragers Tour | Friday, May 8 @ Benchmark International Arena (Amalie), 6:30 PM | M.I.A. and Big Boi are on the bill too. $1 from every ticket goes to The Big Bro Foundation. This is the event of the week, not even close. From $79.

🤼 WWE Backlash 2026 | Saturday, May 9 @ Benchmark International Arena | Tampa has been doing premium live events all year and this is the next one. Full card, main event energy, the crowd will be wild. From $128.

🎸 Country Thunder Florida | May 8-10 @ Coachman Park, Clearwater | Kane Brown headlines, plus O-Town, Chris Kirkpatrick, Ryan Cabrera, and LFO, yeah, it's a full nostalgia moment wrapped in a country festival. Multi-stage, multiple days, beachfront this year.

🎷 Land on Your Feet Jazz Festival | Saturday, May 9 @ Water Works Park | Free outdoor jazz along the Hillsborough River. This one punches way above its weight for a free event. Bring a blanket, bring someone you like.

🌮 Con Amor, Tampa | Florida Ave | They're turning raw corn into fresh masa for handmade tortillas on-site. It's a small operation and the food reflects that in the best way. Not a big flashy spot, just real technique and real flavor.

🎭 Gilberto Santa Rosa | Friday, May 8 @ Morsani Hall, Straz Center, 8 PM | Salsa legend. Multiple decades in. This is the kind of show where half the audience already knows every word and the other half leaves as converts.

🍺 Curren$y @ 1920 Ybor | Friday, May 8, 8 PM | Ybor doing its thing. Chill Friday night alternative to the arena scene if giant crowds aren't your vibe. From $63.

Hidden Gems

🗝️ Eleven80 Cafe · Dale Mabry, Tampa · Two Chicago transplants named their Cuban sandwich and empanada spot after their old area code. The sandwiches hit. The name makes more sense when you find out.

🌿 Water Works Park · West Tampa · People overlook this park constantly. It sits right on the Hillsborough River and when there's an event like the Jazz Festival here, it's genuinely one of the better spots in the city. No excuse not to know it exists.

🎨 Channel District Date Nights · Washington Street Park · Wednesday May 13, 7-9 PM | Quarterly community "how to" class in the Channel District. Lowkey neighborhood energy, not overrun yet. Free to show up and see what's good.

🍸 The Study Wine & Beer Lounge · 3100 3rd Ave N, St. Pete · Wine and Caribbean food tasting happening Thursday May 7 at 7 PM, $35. Not many people on this one. Exactly how I like to bring things.

🎭 Orpheum Tampa · Ybor Area · This venue runs all week, Essenger Thursday, Napalm Death Friday, White Reaper Wednesday. If you've never been in, it's one of the better intimate music rooms in the city. Small, loud, good sound.

Taylor Dillon + Kayla Chang of Con Amor

Taylor Dillon and Kayla Chang started making masa from their apartment. Not a restaurant, not a pop-up, their apartment, with a grinder and a process that takes two days before anyone even eats. That's nixtamalization: soaking raw corn, processing it by hand, grinding it fresh. Most places skip this entirely and open a bag. Taylor and Kayla built a whole restaurant around refusing to do that. They opened Con Amor at the base of the Avenue Lofts on Florida Ave in Seminole Heights. People who've found it have started texting their friends about it. That's the whole marketing strategy, and honestly it's working. When the food is that specific, word moves on its own. Con Amor is at 5240 N Florida Ave, Tampa. Small spot, tight menu, fresh tortillas every day. The kind of people who make you realize how much shortcuts cost.

New in Town

  • Matilde Coastal Mexican Steakhouse, From the Boulon team, landing in Downtown Tampa. Coastal Mexican meets steakhouse. Worth watching for the opening date.

  • Peddler + Potter Oyster House, Bern's Steak House is backing this one. Takes over the Haven space. Seafood-focused, and if you know Bern's, you know the standard they hold.

  • J's Asian Kitchen, Now open on Florida Ave in Seminole Heights. Ramen, pho, noodle dishes. Seminole Heights keeps adding.

  • Cinnaholic, 4th Street N, St. Pete. Vegan gourmet cinnamon rolls, 20+ frosting options. Yes, it's as good as it sounds.

Civic & Community

  • Swim Across America Tampa Bay, Saturday May 9, launches from St. Pete Pier at 6:45 AM. Open water charity swim raising cancer research funds for Johns Hopkins All Children's. Spectators welcome at Spa Beach Park.

  • Yoga in the Park, Monday May 11, Curtis Hixon, 6 PM. Free. Bring a mat.

  • HIIT in the Park, Monday May 11, Curtis Hixon, 6 PM. Also free, run by Crunch Fitness.

  • Blind Date with a Book, Monday May 11, Snow Park, 4:30-7:30 PM. Wrapped mystery books, free. Good weird community energy.

  • Zumba in the Park, Tuesday May 12, Curtis Hixon, 6 PM. Free, Tampa Metropolitan YMCA.
